Harat Al Shanadeed cries for facelift

The old ‘Harats’ and the ancient market in the Wilayat of Ibri in the Al Dhahirah Governorate date back more than 500 years. They were the gateways for travellers and merchants and enjoyed wide fame and economic prosperity for ages.

One of the most famous in the neighbourhood is ‘Harat Al Shanadeed’, adjacent to the Ibri castle. The drawings here date back more than 400 years.

The visitors to this old neighbourhood feel the ingenuity of the Omani civilisation in terms of its unique construction method in that era, which suggests the extent of strength, solidity, homogeneity, interdependence and intimacy among its residents despite the simplicity of life. These houses are decorated with ornate roofs, arches, and ‘mashrabiyats’ (balconies), which are inspired by Arab and Islamic architecture.

Citizens here appeal to the authorities to restore the ancient site. “We are asking the authorities to consider the possibility of restoring this neighbourhood, which is distinguished by its ancient architectural design. Many parts of this site have collapsed, and the rest are falling, especially during the heavy rain.”

“The importance of this quarter lies in its ancient architectural style and as one of the main crossings for commercial caravans in ancient times. Therefore, its proximity to the commercial market is evidence of its commercial importance”, locals told the Observer.

” The competent authorities (the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism) must adopt a design project that will give a facelift to the site to attract tourists to the Wilayat of Ibri,” they said.

Wilayat of Ibri is famous for its ancient lanes, forts and defensive towers. And its market is considered one of the oldest in the Sultanate of Oman, and citizens still practice traditional methods to buy and sell things, including Al Manadah and Al Habta.
