Lisbon: Assigned by His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, the Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Environment Authority, is taking part in the 2022 UN Ocean Conference, being held in Lisbon, Portugal.
Dr Abdullah bin Ali al Amri, Chairman of Environment Authority (EA), delivered the Sultanate of Oman’s speech in which he affirmed commitment to carry on with the efforts aimed at protecting the environment and supporting international efforts to achieve stability and ecological balance in the seas, oceans and other environments.
The chairman of the Environment Authority said that the Sultanate of Oman focuses on the sustainability of the environment and natural resources, noting that the State’s Basic System stipulates commitment to protect the environment and combat pollution. Those principles were translated into a number of legislations such as the Law on Nature Reserves and Wildlife Conservation, the Law on Environment Protection and Combating Pollution, the Law on Marine Fishing and Protection of Living Aquatic Resources, among others.
Al Amri said that recent studies indicated the stable condition of the Omani seas, good levels of temperature, acidity, oxygen and chlorophyll and safe levels of heavy elements and micro plastics. These studies are supported by several evidence and indicators such as the numbers of young turtles, the stability of humpback whale numbers in the seas of the Sultanate of Oman as well as increased sightings of dolphins and improved fish stocks in natural fisheries. — ONA
