Eidiya tradition comes alive

For children, Eidiya is the most anticipated custom of Eid al Adha. Distributing Eidiya — money gifts to children — is a tradition throughout the Arab countries. The amount differs from one family to another and some families not only give children but the older people also. Children gather on the Eid day to receive money from their parents, grandparents and relatives. The word Eidiya is derived from Eid, which signifies giving and kindness. This Arab-Islamic custom dates back to centuries. Eidiya is not only distributed after Eid breakfast. They can be given while going door-to-door to greet the neighbours and friends. Usually during Eid, families are ready to welcome relatives and friends anytime of the day when they are usually served qahwa and chocolate.
