A seminar organised by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources looked at all aspects of establishing model fish markets in the Sultanate of Oman.
The event, titled ‘Schemes for building and developing fish markets: From engineering and health perspectives’, also featured the expertise of Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) in establishing fish markets in various wilayats of the country. PDO has been implementing fish market projects as part of its social responsibility commitments towards the local community.
The seminar also discussed fisheries market projects implemented by the Ministry and their positive impacts for the sector. In developing the infrastructure for these projects, the Ministry took into consideration the feedback of stakeholders to achieve the aspirations of all concerned – fish distributors, sellers and consumers alike.
Models of modern fish markets that meet the urban and environmental requirements were presented, while the importance of basic support facilities was discussed as well.
Also present at the seminar were a number of specialists from the Directorate-General of Marketing and Agriculture and Fisheries Investment, the Directorate-General of Fishing Ports and the Food Safety and Quality Centre at the Ministry. Key experts from PDO attended as well.
