Muscat: The Sultan Qaboos Comprehensive Cancer Care and Research Centre (SQCCCRC) has launched Liver Surgery (LIVES) Registry.
Being the first of its kind in Oman, Liver Surgery (LIVES) Registry comprises a number of local and GCC medical centres.
Dr Abdullah bin Yahya al Far’ee, Surgery Consultant, Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Tumors at the SQCCCRC, said, “The centre seeks to collect patient data in an advanced, integrated and regularised manner to help build a database that can be utilised later in scientific studies.” Besides contributing to scholarly research, the Registry is aimed at utilising the outcome of studies to improve patient care, he added.
Al Far’ee pointed out that the collection of patient data will be undertaken in a confidential process that ensures non-sharing of such data. The processing of data in the Registry will be made only after the approval of the patient, he affirmed.
He stated that the registry includes, in its initial stage, five medical centres: Sultan Qaboos Comprehensive Center for Cancer Treatment and Research, Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, Armed Forces Hospital, Cleveland Clinic Center in Abu Dhabi and Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City (Mayo Clinic) in Abu Dhabi.
He indicated that in addition to contributing to research and scientific papers, the registry aims to use the findings from those studies to improve patient care.
He explained that the registry has an administrative and scientific committee to follow up the progress of the process of receiving and storing information, and to study requests received for the use of information for scientific studies. The committee currently consists of four members from the Sultanate of Oman, the United Arab Emirates and the Republic of France.
The Sultan Qaboos Comprehensive Cancer Care and Research Center aims to be a pioneering Cancer Center that is trusted worldwide in the field of patient care and scientific cancer research.
It integrates patient care with research, teaching, and learning under one roof and have the capability and facility to participate in international trials and studies.
