FRANKFURT: The German football federation will consider internally whether it will bring bonuses for the women’s international team in line with their male counterparts, its president Bernd Neuendorf said on Tuesday.
“I am at least prepared to discuss with the representatives of the senior national teams in our committees whether our bonus system, which has grown over decades, is still up to date,” he said after talks with visiting Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz, “and whether it can be adjusted if necessary.”
Neuendorf cautioned, however, that it must also be “taken note” that “despite the same activity, the markets are still very different.”
Following a tour of the new DFB campus in Frankfurt, Scholz said: “I think this is something political, so it does make sense to discuss equal bonuses.”
Scholz had joined the discussion during the women’s Euro 2022 in England last month, calling via Twitter for equal pay for men and women in the national teams.
Germany’s women each received ?30,000 ($30,700) for their second place finish after losing the Wembley final to England on July 31.
They would have received ?60,000 for the title in contrast to the men, who would each have pocketed ?400,000 for a Euro title in 2021. — dpa
