The debating team of the Sultanate of Oman is participating in the World Schools Debating Championship, which began on August 7 and will continue till August 18. This year debating world cup for secondary level students is hosted by IDEA (International Association for Debating Education) of the Netherlands.
The World Schools Debating Championships (WSDC) is a truly global competition for high school debaters. WSDC takes place in a different country each year. Some of the recent host nations include Peru, Qatar, South Korea, Greece, South Africa, Thailand, Singapore, Germany, Indonesia, and Croatia. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Mexico WSDC 2020 and Macau WSDC 2021 were held online.
Al Waleed al Maawali, Ibrahim al Hatali, and Ayisha al Jabri from the Education Department of Muscat, Lujaina al Madhani from Musandam Governorate and Mira al Alawi from Al Dhahirah Governorate are representing the Sultanate of Oman.
They will be supported by an administrative team comprising Athari al Hashimi, Head of the English Language Department at Oman Debate Centre; Bashayer al Ghanbosi, team manager; Amal al Kaabi, referee; and Gobano Korispati, coach of the team.
Before participating, the team had training camps to prepare for this tournament.
The student debate activity is one of the activities that attract students’ interests in the academic stages, as it is implemented to achieve many goals to contribute to the analysis of issues and ideas. It also sheds light on them by discussing the issue in a sophisticated and civilised scientific dialogue as an educational activity that contributes to fuelling the research among students.
