Deep depression moves towards Pakistan Coast

The latest reading of the satellite images indicates the probability of the tropical deep depression heading towards the coast of Pakistan, and the impact of the system on Sultanate of Oman is expected to be high and medium clouds which may bring isolated rains in the coastal areas of South Al Sharqiyah and Al Wusta.

“Once it reaches the coast of Pakistan the system might die off or gain momentum,” said weather forecaster at Oman Met Office.

There were reports of scattered rain in parts of Al Wusta and Dhofar with the continued flow of clouds associated with the tropical situation on South Al Sharqiah, North Al Sharqiyah, Al Wusta, Dhofar and parts of Al Dhahirah and Al Buraimi.

Oman Met Office said the tropical state deepened into a deep tropical depression with wind speed around the centre 27-33 knots on Saturday. Low horizontal visibility is expected in deserts and open areas on Adam-Haima-Thamrait road due to active winds.

“The high wind speed will continue until Sunday night. Some of the weather stations recorded 38 knots wind speed which is nearly 80 km/hr. It is mainly located between Haima and Thamrait. The wind is strongest from morning till afternoon and then in the evening it slows down slightly,” said the weather forecaster.

Wind activity is expected to continue during the day for the next two days, and with the rise of dust, there has been a decrease in the level of horizontal visibility, especially in areas between Haima and Thamrait. Authorities urged motorists to be alert and maintain distance between vehicles while driving, avoid crossing lanes unnecessarily and switch on headlights even during daytime.

The Royal Oman Police said there is continued low level of horizontal visibility on Adam-Haima-Thamrait road and specifically urged motorists to, “Close the vehicle windows to prevent dust from entering, as well as turn on the headlights.”
