KHASAB: The fishing port in Khasab is one of the main pillars of economic and social development in the Governorate of Musandam, especially in Khasab. It is an important infrastructure that serves the marine fishing sector and the neighbouring wilayats.
Juma Suleiman al Shehhi, Head of Khasab Fishing Port, pointed out that the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources has completed the first and second phases of Khasab port development project in Musandam, at a cost of RO 1,600,000.
In a statement to Oman News Agency (ONA), he that after converting part of the transport port to a fishing harbour, its area became 92,000 square metres, including the port basin with an area of more than 87,000 square meters.
He explained that the port provides an opportunity for the region’s economic growth. It also facilitates the fishing profession for fishermen and provides all basic services and facilities, in addition to boosting the fish industries and related activities.
He pointed out that the fishing port in Khasab serves 2,100 local fishermen and the villages in the wilayat. He added that there are 1,100 boats, 41 fishing vessels and 59 fish transport vehicles.
“Developments also covered the establishment of an ice factory, refueling station, in addition to ships, boats, engines, and marine equipment repair workshops. Some commercial shops dedicated to fishing activities, including selling fishing gear and equipment, cafes, restaurants and other necessary activities are set on the spot with an aim to serve the fishing sector”, he added.
Noting that the next stage will include the establishment of a fish market, a building for the port’s administration, stores and a prayer room, the port is expected to stretch over an area of 92,000 square metres. – ONA
