The shrimp fishing season will begin on Thursday, September 1, in the Sultanate of Oman and will continue for three months, until the end of November.
The shrimp fishing season marks the third of species-based seasonal closures that are enforced during the calendar year – the first being the lobster fishing season which begins in March, followed by the squish fishing season in August. Seasonal bans are key to conserving Oman’s marine resources.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources has completed preparations for the shrimp fishing season by carrying out a number of guidance and awareness activities for artisanal fishermen.
The Department of Fisheries Control and Licensing at the Directorate General of Fish Resources Development will also intensify the work of fish control teams along the coasts of the governorates during the season.
In addition, the Directorate General of Fisheries Research in the Ministry, represented by the Marine Science and Fisheries Centre, carried out a number of scientific research and studies on shrimp fishing equipment and methods, and shrimp farming and propagation along the coasts of the Sultanate of Oman, in addition to scientific studies on the development and development of shrimp fisheries.
The Ministry calls on fishermen who fish for shrimp to adhere to the use of fishing methods and equipment allowed in the season.
It also called on those who deal in buying, selling, trading and exporting shrimp to adhere to the dates of the beginning and end of the shrimp fishing season to register their shrimp stocks after the end of the season. Any trade or export of shrimp after the end of the season will be prohibited unless these harvests are registered with the Ministry, it stressed.
