Agriculture and fisheries sectors together account for 2.5% of GDP

The aggregate volume of agricultural, livestock and fisheries production increased rapidly from 2015 to 2021 at an average growth rate of 8.1 per cent. Total output aggregated 4.6 million tonnes in 2021.

According to the annual report of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, the agriculture and fisheries sectors contributed 2.5 per cent to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) last year.

The data also indicated an increase in the value of exports and imports from the end of the eighth Five-Year Plan (2015) until the end of last year. Total agricultural and fishery exports last year amounted to RO 305 million, compared to RO 270 million in 2015, while imports amounted to RO 991 million, compared to RO 847 million in 2015.

Agricultural production reached 3.2 million tonnes last year, with an average growth rate of 5.5 per cent between 2015 and 2021.

The average growth rate of livestock production for the same period was 10.6 per cent annually, while the average growth rate of fish production was 22.7 per cent per year.

Significantly, the GDP contribution of the agriculture and fishery sectors amounted to RO 759 million in value last year, representing a growth rate of 6.4 per cent over the previous year. The agricultural sector recorded a value of RO 467 million with a growth rate of 4.6 per cent, while the fisheries sector recorded RO 292 million with a growth rate of 9.6 per cent.

The data also showed that the contribution of the value of local agricultural, livestock and fish products represented 66 per cent of total domestic demand in 2021, up from 44 per cent in 2015.

Self-sufficiency in fish reached 151 per cent last year, 66 per cent locally produced vegetables, and 101 per cent with regard to dates. Locally produced fruits recorded self-sufficiency of 49 per cent, fresh milk 84 per cent, red meat 52 per cent, poultry meat 58 per cent, and table eggs 59 per cent.
