Pakistan floods: Embassy calls for help

The United Nations and the Pakistan government launched a 2020 Pakistan Floods Response Plan (FRP) on Tuesday to raise $160 million in the presence of Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Pakistan’s foreign minister. Antonio Guterres also participated in the event.

The launch event will be attended by all UN Member States as well as various UN agencies and humanitarian organizations working on disaster relief.

The FRP will complement the Government’s humanitarian response to the recent floods caused by unprecedented rains in Pakistan.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Embassy in Muscat announced the Establishment of the Prime Minister’s Flood Relief Fund 2022 for flood victims and appealed to all Pakistanis to contribute more.

“The country is under severe floods due to heavy rains over the past weeks in Pakistan with floodwater standing over several thousand square kilometers of all four provinces, causing severe life and financial loss to the country. The government has appealed for international support in view of the exceptional situation. The Prime Minister Flood Relief Fund 2022 has been established to distribute funds to areas where assistance is desperately needed. The State Bank of Pakistan as per the directive of the Prime Minister A scheme has also been developed through which overseas Pakistanis can deliver their donations to their affected brothers and sisters through the following methods.”

Overseas donors, including overseas Pakistanis, can donate through wire transfers from their respective banks to flood fund accounts.

Pakistan needs more than $10 billion to repair and rebuild infrastructure damaged by monsoon rains that have caused devastating flooding, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal said Tuesday.

“Massive damage has been caused to infrastructure — especially in the areas of telecommunications, roads, agriculture, and livelihoods,” he said. Aid efforts ramped up across flooded Pakistan on Tuesday to help tens of millions of people affected by relentless monsoon rains that have submerged a third of the country and claimed more than 1,100 lives. The rains that began in June have unleashed the worst flooding in more than a decade, washing away swathes of vital crops and damaging or destroying more than a million homes.
