London: Norwich went to the top of English football’s second-tier Championship with a 3-0 win at home to Coventry on Saturday.
The Canaries, relegated from the Premier League last season, were bottom of the table after three games.
But they have now posted five successive Championship wins after goals from Teemu Pukki, Josh Sargent and Kieran Dowell saw off Coventry at Carrow Road.
Norwich will lose top spot if Sheffield United win at Hull on Sunday, but delighted Canaries manager Dean Smith said: “It’s never easy to win five games on the trot in any league, let alone this one, so obviously I am very pleased with the result.
“It keeps the momentum going, which is important, ahead of another tough game at Burnley next week.
“I was delighted with the performance, especially in the first half when some of our movement was excellent and we scored two well-worked goals.”
Nahki Wells scored twice as Bristol City recorded back-to-back wins by climbing to third in the table with a 3-2 win over Blackburn Rovers.
Tommy Conway scored for the Robins just before half-time and Wells doubled the lead just after the break.
Tyrhys Dolan pulled one back for Rovers but Wells quickly restored City’s two-goal lead minutes later.
Blackburn’s Ben Brereton Diaz scored in stoppage time but the Robins held out to secure all three points.
Watford dropped to fifth following a 1-1 draw with Rotherham, falling behind to Richard Wood just two minutes into the game before Vakoun Bayo equalised for the Hornets.
Millwall ended a run of three straight defeats with a 2-0 win against Cardiff, thanks to second-half goals from Charlie Cresswell and Benik Afobe.
Thelo Aasgaard struck late for Wigan to come from behind and beat Luton 2-1 at Kenilworth Road.
Carlton Morris headed Luton into the lead just before the break but Wigan equalised 10 minutes from time through Callum Lang.
But Aasgaard curled a superb shot in from 20 yards with two minutes to secure victory for the visitors.
Preston’s run of seven Championship clean sheets was broken after they were beaten 1-0 by Birmingham, with Maxime Colin heading in the lone goal early in the first half.
Swansea won for the second time this season, defeating Queens Park Rangers 1-0, with Joel Piroe scoring soon after after his 15th-minute penalty kick was saved by goalkeeper Seny Dieng.–AFP
