Nama Group issues initial evaluation of power outage

Muscat: Nama Group, the holding company of government-owned assets in Oman’s electricity and related water sector, on Wednesday issued an initial evaluation of the major power outage that the Sultanate of Oman had faced last Monday.

In an online statement issued by Nama following a full-scale investigation to find out causes behind the major power cut, Nama said,”The interruption was due to the sudden exit of a high-voltage line between Ibri and Nahaida stations as a result of a defect in the control and communication systems of that station, which automatically activated the self-protection system, and caused the line to go out of service to protect the line from damage. The exit of this line was followed by an automatic exit of other lines and power stations to protect them from any damage, which in turn led to power cuts in several Governorates. As a result of the proper exit of the electrical system components, the Oman Electricity Transmission Company and the electricity distribution companies were able to restart the network and restore the electricity in a record time”.

The power cut, which was reported on Monday across many governorates of the Sultanate, had led to a major disruption in vital sectors and operations. In this regard, the Nama Group expressed its gratefulness and appreciation to the Authority for Public Services Regulation, the National Committee for Emergency Management, and all related entities for their cooperation to restore the electricity to the affected areas. The Group also appreciated the GCC Interconnection Authority for its support in providing the Sultanate of Oman with electricity during the crisis period which forms part of the implementation of the agreements signed between Gulf Countries to exchange production capacities in emergency cases.
