Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) signed on Monday a contract with Esbaar Artificial Intelligence Technologies and Drones to provide Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) Services for routine surveys, inspections, and surveillance tasks across PDO’s operations areas.
These systems will help reduce exposure to health, safety, and environment hazards, increase the efficiency of the related activities and enhance production through increased monitoring and better data assessment abilities, said PDO in a post on Monday. A group of Omani youth will take over the operation and control of the drones after passing the training period, it further noted.
The use of remotely piloted aircraft and artificial intelligence techniques is widely accepted in the world as an ideal alternative to traditional methods of rugged inspection that require stopping operations, building scaffolding or using lines of rope and sending inspection personnel to dangerous areas for imaging and examination.
By employing modern technologies in inspections, it has become possible to achieve the highest rates of rapid response in emergencies, aerial mapping, as well as close monitoring of projects and the surrounding environment.
According to a recent report by the World Economic Forum, remote drones and robotics are expected to be the most widely used and growing technologies in the oil and gas sector over the next three to five years.
