Running enthusiasts will be on a date with excitement on Friday when the ‘Excellence Performance’, which specialises in running and cycling races, organises the ‘Suhar Half Marathon’ at the Suhar city in North Al Batinah Governorate with 360 participants from various sectors of the society.
The race categories are a half marathon for a distance of 21 km for men and women, the second race for a distance of 10 km for under 21 years men and women, while the third will be a dedicated 4 km race for school students and the fourth category will be a fun race, targeting school students for 1 km.
The marathon will start from the Sohar Sports Complex, passing through the Bahjat Al Anwar farm, Beach Street, the Friday market roundabout, and then returns to the starting point of the sports complex for all groups participating in the race.
The first edition of the half marathon in the Wilayat of Suhar comes due to the large number of marathons that were held during the last period in the Governorate of Muscat such as: The Wave Muscat Marathon, the Ironman Race, and the Dhofar Governorate Marathon in the autumn days. Therefore, the idea came to give the Al Batinah North Governorate an opportunity to organise such important races that enjoy wide participation. Also, it is an opportunity to allow the local participation, who find it difficult to travel for long distances.
Husam al Kindi, marketing director of Excellence Performance, indicated that the Suhar race will be held in September of each year, stressing that after the completion the race, a report will be made and submitted to the Oman Athletics Association as well as to the international federation to recognise the race, to be on the international racing calendar, to attract the largest number of international athletes.
