Oman to be honored for elimination of mother-to-child HIV transmission

Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman has received validation for its achievement of Elimination of Mother to Child Transmission (EMTCT) of HIV and Syphilis, making it the first country to be validated in the Eastern Mediterranean Region.

The certification attests that the Sultanate of Oman has met the global health strategy for the period 2022-2030, which aims to achieve the goal of ending the MTCT of HIV in at least (50) countries within 2025, and in (100) countries by 2030.

The Sultanate of Oman will receive the global validation certificate in a high-profile official ceremony under the auspices of Dr. Hilal All al Sabti, Minister of Health, and senior health officials from the WHO and WHO-EMRO, along with officials and invitees from the Sultanate.

The Sultanate of Oman’s attainment of this achievement came due to several factors, including the presence of a leadership committed to working towards achieving and sustaining the elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV and syphilis (EMTCT) and integrating primary health care institutions that provide care for mothers and children in all governorates of the Sultanate of Oman, in addition To the existence of a network of laboratories that conduct high-quality tests, the existence of updated systems for HIV/AIDS treatment in the Sultanate of Oman, and the existence of an electronic system in all health institutions, whether affiliated or not affiliated with the Ministry of Health and private health institutions.

Meanwhile, a consultation workshop on the Regional Action Plan (RAP) for the Implementation of Global Health Sector Strategies on HIV, Hepatitis, and Sexually Transmitted Diseases (GHSS) 2022-30 was held on Tuesday.

This meeting will help to adapt the strategic directions and actions proposed in the global strategies for the health sector on HIV, viral hepatitis, and sexually transmitted infections (GHSS 2022-2030) and to develop an operational plan of action commensurate with the cultural content of the member states.”

The low prevalence of AIDS in our region is an opportunity to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG 3) and its goal of ending the HIV/AIDS epidemic by 2030.
