Tomorrow, October 27, 2022 is the deadline for members of Oman Chamber of Commerce & Industry (OCCI) to register to vote in elections scheduled on November 22, the Chamber stated on Tuesday.
The OCCI has adopted a new electoral system that aims to enhance the participation of all categories of the private sector in the national economic process, said Dr Saleh bin Said Masan, Commerce & Industry Under-Secretary at the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, who is also Head of the OCCI Elections Committee.
Dr Saleh said the Board of Directors of OCCI will comprise of 21 members, including five from the Governorate of Muscat, and five representing the heads of the chamber’s 10 branches. A further five will be members of the boards of public joint stock companies listed on the Muscat Stock Exchange, their members and chief executives, while one member will represent the foreign investor community with a valid residency permit.
Under the new electoral system, members seeking to exercise their right to vote should have a Riyada card issued in their name, or have at least one Omani employee.
The total number of companies that have a voter membership card has so far reached 13,000, of which 61 per cent represent first and premium class firms. They have at least one Omani employee. There has also been a strong turnout of women nominees for the positions on the chamber’s board, he added.
