Oman’s energy minister heads to Egypt

Muscat: Assigned by His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, Salim bin Nasser Al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals left for the Arab Republic of Egypt on Saturday.

He will be representing the Sultanate in the 27th Session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 27) at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change 2022, held in Sharm El Sheikh from 6 to 18 November.

The conference is part of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, an international convention signed by most countries to curb the impacts of human activity on climate.

The participating countries have undertaken to attend this conference to agree on the rate of emissions of greenhouse gases and CO2 in consistent with reduction of temperature on the plant to less than 1.5 degrees Celsius.

The conference aimed to mitigate, finance and cooperate in mitigation of the earth’s  warming to just below two degrees Celsius and to seriously work on maintaining the target of 1.5 degree Celsius, which requires fast actions that contribute to achieve the aspiration of all parties and to establish a work programme on mitigation and to adapt to the changing weather conditions including heat waves, floods and forest fires.

The conference would focus cooperation to enhance and facilitate agreement during the negotiations to achieve tangible results.

It is worth mentioning that the Sultanate has announced achievement of the Carbon Neutrality by 2050 and has set a national plan and established Oman Sustainability Centre for this purpose.
