'Energy demand for future population a challenge'

The issue of the future challenge of producing more energy for the growing population came during an open discussion on green energy transition in the Sultanate of Oman organised by the Omani French Friendship Association & TotalEnergies under the auspices of Abdulaziz al Shidhani, DG Renewable Energy and Hydrogen at the Ministry of Energy and Minerals at the Conference on Solar and Hydrogen on Tuesday.

As the size of a population increases, so does its energy consumption. Studies suggest that the population the planet can sustain depends on the amount of energy sources available.

It is reported that global energy demand will shoot as high as 47 per cent in the next 30 years, and by 2050, alternative energy sources will be highly relied upon than the traditional ones driven by population and economic growth. This will further burden increasing oil and natural gas production, and policy changes by various governments.

“Producing more energy for the increasing population will be a major challenge of the future,” said Sergio Giorgi, TotalEnergies Oman Country Chair who shared his global vision of this accelerating green sector with the audience of 120 people from the energy sector, diplomats, and students.

The Omani French Friendship Association organised the event on Renewable Energies, in collaboration with TotalEnergies EP Oman Development BV Oman Branch in line with Oman’s ambition to position the Sultanate of Oman as a leading global green hydrogen hub.

The conference titled “To what extent can Solar & Hydrogen play in the energy transition?” showcased the ongoing projects and future in Oman in the solar and hydrogen sectors.

Mohammed al Riyami, Business Support Manager of TotalEnergies, coordinated an insightful panel discussion led by Abdulaziz al Shidhani, DG of Renewable Energy and Hydrogen, at the Ministry of Energy and Minerals.

Global energy is shifting rapidly to electricity and hydrogen, power generation depending on renewables, soaring oil demand and so makes the demand for gas, growing hydrogen demand, hydrogen in use in transport and industries, sustainable fuels, energy technologies highly in use, and tackling carbon emissions are the other major issues facing the future energy sector.

Georgio Akiki, Gas, Head of Solar Distribution Generation of TotalEnergies, presented the solar project ongoing with Sharqiyah Desalination Company (Veolia) in Sur. Yann Bourles, Solar Utility Scale Business Developer and Zakariya al Battashi, Renewables Business Developer of TotalEnergies explained the trends we expect to see over the short term and beyond. Stephan Gobert, SVP Hydrogen AMEA of ENGIE talked about how hydrogen will impact the energy transition journey of Oman. The panel discussion was followed by an exciting question and answer session, with a lot of participants who took part and had the opportunity to speak directly with authority.

The Omani French Friendship Association is a non-profit association dedicated to strengthening Omani and French relationships through developing trade, economic, and cultural exchanges between the two communities.
