Thunderstorms, rains lash parts of Oman

Muscat: Several governorates and wilayats of the Sultanate of Oman were lashed by thunderstorms of varying intensity on Sunday as a result of low pressure conditions.

This was the first of depressions and thunderstorms lashing Oman in the winter this year, according to an official from Oman Meteorology at the Civil Aviation Authority, (CAA).

As a result of the thunderstorms on Sunday, several wadis in the Sultanate were overflowing, particularly those in the Wilayat of Seeb that received the highest volume of rainfall.

According to a statement published by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, the wilayats of Muscat Governorate recorded higher rainfall compared to other wilayats in the Sultanate till 9 am on Sunday.

The Wilayat of Seeb recorded 33 mm of rainfall, followed by Al Amerat with 22 mm, and the wilayats of Bausher, Muttrah and Muscat, receiving 20mm, 18mm and 14mm of rainfall, respectively.

The lowest amount of rain was recorded in the Wilayat of Wadi Al Ma’awil in the Governorate of South Al Batinah, at just 4 mm.

The official from Oman Meteorology confirmed that cold northwesterly winds will continue today, that is, Monday morning, in various regions of the Sultanate and coastal areas, especially the Governorate of Muscat, leading to a noticeable decrease in temperatures and formation of low clouds.
