From mountain heights and treks to heritage sites and ancient lanes, there are diverse, multiple and unique experiences in Al Dakhiliyah governorate. Jabal Akhdhar or the green mountain is a unique destination and is known for its exceptional climate and spectacular nature. It is located on a high mountain range 2,000 metres above sea level.
During summer the temperature is moderate here and dips below zero during winter. Jabal Akhdar has wadis, heritage villages and a number of caves in its surroundings which have always fascinated those who love adventures and exploration.
Jabal Shams is another tourist destination that sees a flow of tourists during winter. This is the highest peak in Oman and if you see from its peak towards the south you would find areas where tourists can reach when they come from wilayat Al Hamra.
Al Dakhiliyah governorate is also full of natural, historical and cultural elements. Nizwa fort due to its historical importance is the primary choice of tourists. Jabreen Castle is the most beautiful historic castle in the whole of Oman. This historic castle was constructed in the late 17th century and is located in Bahla in the Al Dakhiliyah Governorate about 175km away from Muscat.
The castle is three storeyed tall and the interior design of the castle has decorated windows, wooden balconies, arches with inscribed Arabic calligraphy, and ceiling artwork.
According to Oman’s Ministry of Tourism, “Jabreen Castle dates back to 1670. This castle was a beautiful palace for the Imam and his family and a bastion during wartime. It was also a beacon of education and contained many study rooms. The palace is a large rectangular building consisting of five floors and containing 55 rooms. A Falaj runs through the middle of the castle. This castle is distinguished by the inscriptions and frescoes that adorn its rooms. The castle’s ceilings are decorated with paintings and Islamic-era style inscriptions, and it’s doors are beautifully carved. All these architectural details make Jabreen Castle an authentic expression of Omani craftsmanship.”
