Action plan, readiness to address impacts of Shaheen reviewed

Muscat: The National Emergency Management Committee (NEMC) held an extraordinary meeting on Saturday under the chairmanship of Lt. Gen. Hassan Mohsin Al Shuraiqi, Inspector General of Police and Customs, Chairman of the Committee.

At the outset of the meeting, Lt. Gen. Al Shuraiqi conveyed to the Committee the directives of His Majesty Sultan Haitham Bin Tarik, the Supreme Commander to provide all that secures the safety of citizens and residents in the Sultanate when the tropical condition (Shaheen) makes landfall.

He also conveyed His Majesty the Sultan’s wishes that the landfall would bring about blissful rains.

The NEMC listened to a briefing from specialists of the Civil Aviation Authority (National Centre for Multi-Hazard Early Warning) on updates and numerical readings of the tropical condition and its potential risks.

The meeting reviewed the recommendations of sub-committees of the NEMC in the governorates, as well as preparedness efforts exerted by the main panel and auxiliary departments sharing the responsibility of tackling Shaheen and its expected impacts on the lands of Oman.

The meeting also studied readiness tasks undertaken by various sectors at a time the NEMC is bracing to address the tropical condition, diminish its risks, secure public safety and limit the material losses.

The NEMC reviewed the resources of each sector and its preparedness to lend back support on demand. It also studied the plan set to evacuate residents in low-lying areas, accommodate them in relief shelters and provide them with basic requirements.

The NEMC affirmed its resolve to keep enhancing resources and facilities to ensure the sustainability of public life and protect lives and properties.

Lt. Gen. Al Shuraiqi exhorted the members of the NEMC to do their best to support emergency response operations in governorates of the Sultanate and supply them with the resources they need to overcome the expected impacts of the tropical condition on citizens and residents.
