Al Aswad Castle awaits facelift

Historical monuments and tourist attractions abound in the town of Muqniyat in the Wilayat of Ibri (Al Dhahirah Governorate). The town is located to the north-east of the centre of the Wilayat of Ibri, about 362 km away from the Muscat Governorate. The name of the town is derived Muqniyat, which means water channels due to the large number of such streams.

Muqniyat is home to Al Aswad Castle, whose construction dates back to nearly 500 years. It was built by King Falah bin Mohsin al Nabhani, who made Muqniyat as the centre of his rule and named it after his son Al Aswad bin Muqniyat.

The fortress consists of four towers: Sulaiman Tower, Wind Tower, Morning Tower and Watchtower. All of these towers were used for security purposes, due to the lack of political stability at the time. The fort is located on a high rocky outcrop that can be seen from a distance, surrounded by palm, mango and Sidr plantations. The fort is a fine example of Omani architecture that evolved over several years.

Most of the castle’s walls were built with only stone and mud. Over time, many of the castle’s facilities including its towers collapsed. Thus, roaming inside the fort is dangerous and risky. The locals advise visitors not to enter the fort to avoid any sudden collapses.

This town, which is located 50 km from the centre of the Wilayat of Ibri, enjoys a distinct geographical location in terms of different terrains.

Wadi Muqniyat still flows between the high mountains and farm terraces. Some sources indicate that the mango in Oman was first grown in Muqniyat.

In general, there are many castles and fortresses in Ibri that were set up for defending the town as well as administrative centres for the conduct of wilayat affairs, education and the study of legal sciences. Among the most important of these castles are Al Ghabi castle, Al Draiz castle, Al Salaif castle, Al Shahshah castle and Ibri castle.

Citizens are still proud of these sites, which bear witness to the history of the Sultanate of Oman over the ages. The residents said unless the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism take up restoration these slices of history will be lost forever.
