Muscat: A medical team specializing in endocrine surgery at the Royal Hospital succeeded in performing a rare surgery to remove a thyroid gland weighing 973 gr from the neck of a woman who has been suffering from a tumour for five years.
Commenting on the surgical operation, Dr Omar Ahmed Ridha, thyroid and general surgery consultant, Department of Surgery at the Royal Hospital, said: “This is a rare and complicated operation given the size and nature of the tumour and it needed a great deal of precision and skill as the tumour existed rich amid arteries, veins, and nerves that control other body functions.”
The tumour was large and pressing the trachea and esophagus extending from the neck down to the rib cage. The surgery took about two hours, Dr Omar said, noting that such operations need special equipment to ensure the radical removal of the tumour while preserving the vital organs. — ONA
