Roads in Oman to fuel growth

Several new roads and other infrastructure projects, as well as existing ones, are currently gaining pace to ease traffic and give a fillip to the developmental initiatives. The Ministry of Transport, Communication and Information Technology (MoTCIT) and the Muscat Municipality have taken initiatives in this regard.

The latest in the series of developmental projects is the tender invitation by the Muscat Municipality for An’Nuzha Dual Carriageway Project in Maabela area in Al Seeb, to construct a dual carriageway in the area, as part of the development projects implemented by Muscat Governorate.

The project extends to 11 km length, and 3.5 km of service streets besides the establishment of 6 large-capacity traffic intersections and side protections to serve the areas adjacent to the street. Additionally, there will be drainage systems for surface water, the implementation of which will begin during the second quarter of 2023.

Upon implementation of the project in less than two years, the project will help enhance the development of commercial and residential areas, while distributing the traffic flow and thus avoiding traffic snarls at various points. This project will also serve urban development plans, facilities and neighbourhoods adjacent to the street.

Another ongoing project is the dualisation of the Sultan Qaboos University road in Al Khoudh area of Al Seeb, which will begin from the roundabout in District Six in Al Khoudh to the traffic lights intersection in front of Gate No 2 of SQU.

The project includes converting the existing roundabout in the Al Khoudh Sixth District area into a four-way intersection with signal lights, in addition to constructing a new signal-controlled intersection in front of the entrance to the Sultan Qaboos University Hospital.

Upon completion in the last quarter of 2023, this project is aimed to accommodate the increasing traffic in this area and on the road near the SQUH, which is also home to several educational, health and commercial facilities and residential neighbourhoods.

“Roads are vital for the developmental initiatives of a country and are significant infrastructure elements that can be addressed as a development parameter for countries regarding economic, industrial, and service aspects,” a spokesperson from the Muscat Municipality said.

The MoTCIT has recently announced that it completed 65 per cent of Wadi Al Qanoot Road project in the Wilayat of Al Khabourah in Al Batinah North Governorate, which is supervised by the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology. The dualised road starts from Wadi Al Sarami Road and ends in Al Qanoot village with a length of 7.5 km and the cross-section of the road consists of two traffic lanes with a width of 3.5 meters on each lane.

The project also includes a number of drainage culverts, equipped with traffic safety measures such as iron fences, informative signboards, and road painting and a great amount of attention is given to the road design in accordance with highways design manual in the Sultanate of Oman.
