MUSCAT: Mazoon Electricity Company (MZEC), the leading electricity provider in Oman, in cooperation with Oman Environmental Services Holding Company (be’ah) has succeeded in safe disposal of 1,500 litres of transformer oil used for maintenance operations.

The company classified the hazardous waste produced during various operations and used appropriate environmental protection standards to safely dispose the materials.

Additionally, the company created a tracking mechanism for the waste materials, which included collection, loading and transportation from warehouse by using recommended and approved tools and equipment for the purpose as per the laws in force in the Sultanate.

The objective of this project was to increase the recyclable value of these materials in comparison with previous disposal practices, enhance environmental culture with internal and external stakeholders and follow permitted environmental practices.

Majid Nasser Al Busaidy, Chief Operations Officer- Distribution in Mazoon Electricity said, “Our activities are in line with the core values of Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) commitments.

The company is devoted to work processes and products, which has enabled us to help protect and reduce environmental impact and secure the wellness, health and operational safety of our employees and community. Mazoon Electricity pursues business activities that promote environmental protection and conservation. The company recognises that acts such as safe disposal of transformer oil, contributes to preserving the environment and creating a healthy global environment.”

Kumail Ahmed Al Lawati, Head of Business Development, be’ah said, “We are pleased to partner with Mazoon Electricity which has a strong commitment towards the environment. We are keen to work with them towards safe disposal of oil. We will use the latest international standards to achieve the standards of sustainability. In line with the national strategy for managing the waste in Oman, we seek to protect the environment from the risks of random disposal of waste.”

Last year in line with environmental sustainability practices Mazoon Electricity and be’ah had signed an agreement for the safe collection and disposal of lead acid batteries (LAB).

As per the agreement, be’ah is responsible for collecting and transporting LAB from the Mazoon Electricity plant to a certified processing and recycling facility.

The move supports Mazoon Electricity in ensuring its work processes are in accordance with the stipulated environmental laws of the Sultanate.

MZEC is a closed Omani joint stock company registered under the Commercial Companies Law of Oman. The company is primarily undertaking regulated distribution and supply of electricity in Al Dakhiliya, South Al Sharqiya, North Al Sharqiya, South Batinah governorates and Suwaiq in North Batinah governorate under a license issued by the Authority of Public Services Regulation, Oman.
