Muscat: More than 33,000 new infections have been reported in the Sultanate of Oman in January this year. This makes January the fourth highest in terms of new infections in a month since the beginning of the pandemic in February 2020, a data analyst and social activist said.
Ibrahim Al Maimani, a data analyst, said: “The total number of new infections in January was 33,272 at a daily average of 1,073, while in December, it was 1,068.
The month-wise incidence of new infections in January was the fourth highest ever since the pandemic began in February 2020.
January 2021 recorded the highest incidence with the number of infections standing at 51,321. This was followed by July 2020 with 39,089 new infections and April 2021 with the number of infections standing at 34,886.”
Al Maimani pointed out that the number of recoveries in January this year was 14,733 with a daily average of 475, while in December, just 412 recoveries were reported each day. The number of active cases in January was 19,584 dipping the recovery rate to 93 per cent.”
“There was a marked increase in the number of inpatients at hospitals. While at the beginning of the January there were just 14 cases, their number shot up to 320 cases at the end of the month.”
“The number of intensive care cases at the beginning of January was 4, but by the end of the month, the number reached 52 cases, an increase of 48 cases,” he added
Similarly, the number of deaths stood at 30 in January, while in December, just 3 deaths were reported.
In November, the number of deaths was two.
