Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman welcomed the decision of the United Nations General Assembly to designate the 15th of March of each year as the International Day to Combat Islamophobia.
This came in the Sultanate of Oman’s speech delivered by Ambassador Dr Mohammed bin Awad Al Hassan, the Sultanate of Oman’s permanent representative to the United Nations, before the United Nations General Assembly as part of its discussion of the item titled “Combating the phenomenon of anti-Islam and Muslims (Islamophobia)”.
The Sultanate made it clear that respect for the other is one of the noble goals and objectives on which the mission of the United Nations is based, and that confronting extremism, fanaticism and hatred has become a necessity of joint international action.
The Sultanate affirmed its rejection of any attempts aimed at offending religious symbols, and that it is not wise to exploit freedom of expression as a pretext to offend religious symbols and the beliefs of others.
He called on all countries to hold the promoters of intolerance and hatred to account, noting that respect is a duty and required, and coexistence is a necessity to bring ideas and cooperation closer.
He indicated that hostility to Islam and Muslims is a growing phenomenon that affects the lives and rights of many people around the world and must be confronted and cannot be underestimated under the pretext of freedom of expression.
