Rains bring relief as well as traffic snarls

Life was partially put on hold as incessant rains lashed parts of the Sultanate of Oman and places adjacent to Al Hajar Mountains and north and south Al Batinah bore the brunt of the same.

While areas prone to water clogs and other low-lying areas were guarded by the Royal Oman Police and brigades from Civil Defence and Ambulance Authority (CDAA), the authorities have categorically reiterated that they would deal firmly with anyone who exposes himself and others to the risk of crossing valleys.

At many places, citizens and residents were seen enjoying the rains while kids had a ball of time playing in the rains.

There were many accidents as vehicles lost control as visibility dipped to near-zero in the rains. However, no casualties were reported (till now), according to the CDAA spokesperson.

Since the alert of inclement weather in the Sultanate was announced days ago, the authorities identified advanced deployment points of the CDAA in all governorates in order to respond and deal with potential reports due to the effects of the weather situation.

“Since the announcement of the adverse weather conditions, CDAA deployed officials at all key points and they stood guard in the rain to safeguard people from accidents, to educate community members and to urge them to stay away from low-lying and coastal places,” the spokesperson told the Observer.

He further said that there were incidents of rocks falling on the road while signals in most parts were down since the downpour from morning.

“Both citizens and residents should be watchful of the weather conditions and pay close attention and to protect children from the water clogs which will be formed all low-lying areas,” he said, adding that “People should avoid driving as much as possible during the rains as chances of wheels slipping off the road and visibility turning near to zero are unavoidable.”
