Sultanate of Oman sees over 3,000 divorces in 2020

Muscat – The number of marriages registered in the Sultanate of Oman increased by 2.1 percent to 18,621 in 2020 compared to 2019, according to the bulletin issued by the National Center for Statistics and Information (NCSI).

The Governorate of North al Batinah topped among the governorates in registering marriage documents for the year 2020, with 3,938, an increase of 11 percent compared to 2019, followed by the Governorate of Muscat 3,354, an increase of 1.9 percent over 2019.

Marriage registrations dropped in Musandam Governorate in 2020 by 31.1percent to 104 compared to 2019, making it the lowest governorate in registering marriages for the year 2020.

The data also showed a decrease in the number of Omani men married to expatriates in 2020 by 180 cases, and the number of Omanis married to Gulf women decreased by 49 compared to 2019. The number of Omani women getting married to a Gulf citizen decreased by 65, while the number of Omani women marrying expatriates dropped by 53.

The number of divorce certificates registered in the Sultanate of Oman in 2020 was 3,426, a decrease of 8.1 percent compared to 2019, and at a rate of 9.4 divorce cases per day, where the number of divorce cases decreased in 2020 between Omani couples by 192 cases. The number of divorces between Omanis and GCC citizens dropped by 17.

Muscat governorate has the highest number of divorces among governorates (796), followed by North al Batinah (672) and Musandam (18).
